Insurance Coverage and Income Verification

A few days after the announcement regarding the employer mandate delay, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued new regulations related to the insurance exchange marketplaces.

For the first year of operation (2014), state-based exchange marketplaces will be allowed to accept an individual’s attestation regarding enrollment in an eligible employer-sponsored plan, as well as their stated household income, “without further verification.” In addition, verification will not be required for the age of an applicant for a catastrophic plan until 2015. These delays are intended to give the exchange marketplaces extra time to develop their verification systems.
